J. Matthews

I used to sit by the window, watching the snow,
Wondering if someone would see me, would know.
I’d press my hand to the glass, feeling the cold,
And whisper, “Please find me, before I get old.”
Nights felt so quiet, and mornings so long,
Like I didn’t belong in the world’s busy song.
I made up stories of a mom with soft hands,
A dad who could fix things, who’d always understand.
I dreamed of a brother who’d laugh when I’d fall,
But then help me up and say, “You’re not bad at this at all.”
I’d picture the hugs I never once knew,
But those dreams were just dreams—they never came true.
Then one night, I heard her knock on my door,
“Someone’s here, Timmy,” she said, smiling more.
I froze on the stairs, my heart in my throat,
And when I saw them, my knees almost broke.
A mom with kind eyes and arms warm as spring,
A dad with a laugh that made my heart sing.
And there he was—my brother, like in my dreams,
Grinning at me, splitting at the seams.
“Hey!” he said, “I’m Jake, and you’re Tim!
We’re gonna have fun—just wait till it begins!”
He handed me a scarf, the softest I’d felt,
And for the first time in forever, my heart began to melt.
Now, I don’t sit by the window anymore,
There’s too much to do with my family of four.
Jake and I build forts and play in the snow,
He always lets me win, though he pretends not to know.
Mom hums when she bakes; the kitchen smells sweet,
And Dad tells his jokes that knock me off my feet.
I have my own bed with a blanket that’s mine,
And hugs every night—warm, safe, and fine.
Sometimes at night, when it’s quiet and still,
I stare at the stars and let my heart fill.
Because once I was waiting, so lonely, so small,
And now I have everything—family and all.
I whisper, “Thank you,” as the stars softly gleam,
Because someone heard my wish, my impossible dream.
And now I have love, and now I belong,
And my heart feels warm where it once felt wrong.
Now I have a brother, a mom, and a dad.
And for the first time, I’m more happy than sad.
So I don’t press my hand to the glass anymore—
I just hold onto theirs, and step through the door.
